Tree Protection Orders, TPOs, are designed to protect trees on private land. They require the owner of the land to ask for permission before felling a tree or pruning it. Until 1974 they were applied by Ilkley Urban District Council. Now that Ilkley is a ward within the City of Bradford they are managed by Bradford Council’s Planning Department.
They are often applied to single trees but can also applied to groups of trees.
Any tree or group of trees within a Conservation Area is subject to similar protection.
