This tree stands on its own and looks magnificent.  It’s showing early signs of ash dieback.  Let’s hope it survives a good while longer.

When I see big trees like this I wonder how old they are.  150 years?
In winter Ash trees can often be identified by “bunches of keys” hanging from their branches but this specimen doesn’t have any.  The nearby smaller Ash tree does.

It is so unexpected to find a Stone pine here. It is the only one I know of along the river and I think is probably self seeded. The cones are huge and sit upright on the tree.

I like the way the branches curve down to hug the floor giving the tree a windswept look, braced against the elements. The view from this location is also quite spectacular.

This group of trees is a landmark on the moor with a dramatic outline especially in winter.  You can sit under them and look out over Ilkley and across the valley to Beamsley Beacon.
